I often want to romanticize birth work and describe doulas as the knight and shining armor here to defend and protect all birthing bodies and advocate for their birthing choices.
Realistically, doulas are the backbone of your support team. Yes, they are there to support you and make sure your voice is heard but they also are there for pain management and encouragement.
Doulas are also proven to improve postpartum recovery outcomes. And are not limited to all-natural birthing options. While doulas lessen the likelihood of a C-Section a doula can also be utilized in a scheduled or unplanned c-section.
Doulas can also be used in medicated births to keep labor progressing and offer different laboring positions. For couples needing fertility support, a doula can increase the likelihood of getting and sustaining a successful pregnancy.
And in the case of infant loss or miscarriage, there are doulas specifically trained to support you through your time of bereavement.
While the term doula may be new to you, a birth support person has been an integral part of every community since the beginning of time. It has been only recently that our society has taken a turn towards more medicated births.
What are some ways you think a doula can support you during your pregnancy?
