I've always been a planner. Even as a kid I loved to plan every last detail of anything. When I was 10 years old I had drawn up a complete plan for my life. Can you tell I'm a Capricorn? So it was no surprise that when I found out I was expecting I got right down to the nitty-gritty! I wrote out my birth plan about 3 different times each time it became even more precise and complex. I would have planned an hour by hour birth plan if I could.
What was also not a surprise is that my entire birth plan was thrown out the window. From not being induced to not having interventions. I did, however, have the chance to stick with a vaginal delivery. At first, I was so upset that I had made what surmounted to a complete dissertation was just gone. Not realizing that both my son and I went home happy and healthy. With all that planning I Iost sight of the ultimate goal.
Don't get me wrong all that planning prepared me for what I was about to face. But it only added more pressure and stress when things didn't go the way I had planned it to. Instead, a birth plan should be used as a tool or guide to help prepare anyone involved with your labor and delivery of your choices and preferences. It also gives you a chance to talk and make a decision about things you wouldn't consider if you weren't in labor or after delivery.
There is no perfect birth plan. But to plan means to be prepared. It's also imperative to remember plans change and that's ok.
